  9.                               ESDI hard disk controllers

  19.         PROBLEM:
  20.         
  21.         A site-specific patch called 4.00 patch 2YXXX is available from
  22.         Banyan that fixes a problem with the file system in VINES 4.00.
  23.         This patch can be applied to VINES Revisions 4.00 (0), 4.00 (1),
  24.         and 4.00 (2).  It is available from your Support Center.
  25.         
  26.         Note that the fix for this problem will be included in a subsequent
  27.         maintenance patch and in all future revisions of VINES.
  28.         
  29.         The problem occurs when all of the following conditions are met:
  30.         
  31.            ■ Your server is running VINES/386 or VINES/486 (ISA).  Other
  32.              platforms (such as VINES/286, PS/2 servers, and Banyan/CNS
  33.              servers) do not exhibit this problem.
  34.         
  35.              NOTE:  VINES/SMP servers could also exhibit this problem.
  36.              However, since very few COMPAQ SYSTEMPRO servers run with
  37.              ESDI or ST506 hard disks, patch 2YXXX was not cut VINES SMP.
  38.              If you are running an ST506 or ESDI controller in a VINES SMP
  39.              server, turn bad block remapping off and call your Support
  40.              Center immediately.
  41.         
  42.            ■ The server is running VINES 4.00 (0), 4.00 (1), or 4.00 (2).
  43.         
  44.            ■ The server's hard disk is running from an ST506 or an ESDI
  45.              controller.  (This problem does not occur on hard disks that are
  46.              running from SCSI controllers or the COMPAQ IDA controller.)
  47.         
  48.            ■ Bad block remapping is enabled on your server.
  49.         
  50.            ■ A multiple-sector disk write is being performed over a part of
  51.              the hard disk that includes a bad block.
  52.         
  53.         If all of these conditions exist, information before the bad block
  54.         will be written to the disk, but information after the bad block will
  55.         not be written.  Symptoms vary according to which file in the system
  56.         is damaged.
  57.         
  58.         
  59.         
  60.         SOLUTION:
  61.         
  62.         If you are running a version of VINES that could exhibit this file
  63.         system problem, turn bad block remapping off immediately.  To do this,
  64.         follow these steps:
  65.         
  66.            1. From the System Maintenance menu, select Configure/Diagnose
  67.               Server.
  68.         
  69.            2. From the VINES Server Configuration menu, select Configure
  70.               File System.
  71.         
  72.            3. The next screen displays the status of the bad block remapping
  73.               feature for your system.  If bad block remapping is ON, select
  74.               the option "TURN bad block remapping on/off".  This turns off
  75.               bad block remapping.  The feature should not be turned on again
  76.               until patch 2YXXX (or a future VINES maintenance patch or
  77.               revision) is applied to your server.
